About the Creation
Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC) created an immersive performance for the Haringey Feast, combining dance, spoken word and music to celebrate the borough’s culture, creativity and diversity.
BGAC’s project was completed in collaboration with: Steppaz, an award-winning street dance company; spoken word artist Tim Forde; Reggae Choir, led by award-winning singer songwriter and founder Fola Phillip. These organisations and creatives came together to choreograph an immersive, Haringey inspired performance for the Haringey Feast.
About the Artists
Steppaz
Steppaz is an award-winning street dance company, creating positive impact through dance ‘One Step At A Time’.
Established in 2013, Steppaz provides professional classes for people of all ages at the BGAC to develop self-confidence, creativity, problem solving, and collaboration. Steppaz support, prepare and empower local young people to be able to apply actionable skills to deal with the worldwide challenges facing society and life.
Tim Forde
Tim Forde is a British born spoken word artist, actor and filmmaker whose subject matter ranges from love to social commentary
Of Nigerian and Bajan heritage, Tim has been writing poetry since the age of 13. His works include ‘What’s the meaning of love?’, ‘Where does the blame lie?’ and ‘Revolt’; you can access his work on all music platforms.
Tim is also responsible for making the controversial documentary - which he submitted for his Masters’ in 2011 - titled ‘What’s Wrong with Tottenham?’. He produced the film under the alias Anthony Tim Ogunmuyiwa.
Reggae Choir
Reggae Choir is an adult vocal ensemble open to all who enjoy singing Reggae - no experience required!
Meeting weekly at a number of London venues, Reggae Choir cover Ska, Rocksteady, Bluebeat, Two Tone, Reggae, Roots, Lovers Rock, Pop reggae, Contemporary Reggae and Pop Music (with a Reggae twist!). The choir have performed alongside Reggae legends including Sandra Cross, Janet Kay, Dennis Bovell, Tippa Irie, Black Slate and Winston Reedy.
Reggae Choir is led by award-winning singer songwriter, performer, recording artist and producer Fola Phillip. She has spent the last 20 years as a music educator within further education, outreach projects, youth programs, primary and secondary schools, and as a senior lecturer at University of East London. By using a holistic approach, Fola combines technique training and artistic expression to build confidence and spread the joy of singing!
About the Community
BGAC’s Haringey Feast project provided a place local young Black aspiring artists to develop and perform their work. They have a long and wonderful history of working with community groups and artists to provide access to and opportunities within the creative business.
